It is not so much that he thinks he would be a martyr, Roger, as much as 
it is that his fate (by torture) would become an extremely effective 
recruiting tool for the Al-Qaeda.  His fate would serve to unite people 
against a common enemy and, thus, serve as a martyr to those seeking 
leadership (or at least a cause to rally behind) in the troubled Mid-East.
