The Friday Letter
A Newsletter for University of Idaho Alumni and Friends March 16, 2007

Dear Friends,

It's Spring Break, and here in Moscow it's beginning to look and feel like
spring. A growing number of University of Idaho students take advantage of
Spring Break to get involved in service and learning projects, and there are
several inspiring efforts to highlight this year.

A group of 108 students and staff have returned to the Gulf Coast to assist
in ongoing recovery efforts from the 2005 hurricanes. This year, teams will
be in Waveland, Miss., and New Orleans, La., to help residents rebuild. A
group of Idaho students also will travel to Maryville, Tenn., to help
Habitat for Humanity build homes in the Appalachian region. Idaho students
have online blogs, and you can follow their efforts at
www.asui.uidaho.edu/volunteer. A group of Idaho law students also are in New
Orleans to work with the Student Hurricane Network to provide legal
assistance to hurricane victims. Their blog is at:

Other Idaho students are engaged in international learning experiences this
week. Nine students from the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences are
in Guadalajara, Mexico, to gain new perspectives on international
agriculture. They'll visit a poultry farm, a tomato farm where greenhouses
produce crops for export to Idaho and a hacienda that grows blue agave
cactus to produce tequila. Also, 11 Graue Scholars from the College of
Business and Economics are in Shanghai, China, on an international business
education program. And five students just returned from Kenya where they
tested more than a year's worth of innovative research and design focused on
providing clean water for the nomadic Maasai tribes.

These are experiences that transcend the traditional boundaries of a college
education-that transform students' lives along with the lives of the people
and communities they travel far and wide to assist. It is these experiences
that help make the University of Idaho where the best students want to be.

Here's the latest news from the University of Idaho:

Dancers, Drummers, Dreamers, an ever-changing show with a mix of dance and
original live music, and different types of percussion and dance ensembles,
is featured in the Hartung Theatre March 22-24 at 7:30 p.m., with an
afternoon performance at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 24. Tickets are on
sale at the Ticket Office or by calling (208) 885-7212.

In addition to philanthropic support, alumnus Ron Walters '70 also is giving
the gift of talent by leading the strategic planning efforts of the College
of Art and Architecture. Walters has world-class experience as a planning
consultant for organizations such as Fred Meyer, the World Bank and John
Hancock. According to college Dean Bill Woolston, Walters' volunteer effort
comes at a particularly significant point. "The time commitment is enormous,
covering six multi-day strategic planning sessions that produced our vision,
core values, missions, strategies and goals," Woolston said. "It's allowed
the college to determine what we want to become - a internationally
respected leader in art and architecture education." To learn more about
giving to the College of Art and Architecture, contact Bill Woolston at
