Trump’s Day Just Got Worse As New York Fraud Investigation Orders Him To Testify

According to The Washington Post, New York Attorney General Letitia James isn’t done investigating former President Donald Trump just because she’s running for governor. The outlet reports that James is seeking a deposition from Trump early next year to investigate potential fraud inside the Trump Organization. I can’t really imagine the twice-impeached one-term president testifying under oath without lying.
 
“James has requested to take his testimony on Jan. 7 at her New York office as part of a civil investigation into whether Trump’s company committed financial fraud in the valuations of properties to different entities, according to the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the inquiry is ongoing,” the outlet reports.
One of the people familiar with the investigation told the outlet that James is examining whether widespread fraud “permeated the Trump Organization.”
“The deposition marks an escalation in the probe of the former president’s company and a critical moment for James, who is running for governor next year,” the report continues.
 
“Both the attorney general and the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office are scrutinizing whether Trump’s company broke the law by providing low values to property tax officers while using high ones to garner tax breaks or impress lenders,” the Post reports.

“James has said she is considering filing a lawsuit over the matter, and Manhattan prosecutors have convened a new grand jury to consider potential criminal charges related to the company’s financial practices, according to the people familiar with the investigations,” the report continues.

The paper notes that Trump has not been personally accused of wrongdoing. Trump has previously lashed out at James and her investigation into his businesses, calling it a “witch hunt.”

People close to Trump told the outlet that the former president has regularly expressed frustration about the investigation privately.

“If Trump refuses to appear for the deposition, James and her office could take him to court and try to force him to comply,” the report adds.
