SNOW, BELOW-FREEZING TEMPS IN FORECAST FOR EAST IDAHO

It's almost May but winter-like temperatures as well as snow are in the forecast for East Idaho.

The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for Sunday night and Monday morning in East Idaho calling for temps in the 20s. Temperatures this cold will be capable of killing crops and other sensitive vegetation, the weather service said.

Snow and rain could possibly fall on East Idaho Sunday through Tuesday, with the greatest chances of precipitation in lower elevation areas such as Pocatello, Chubbuck, American Falls, Aberdeen, Fort Hall, Blackfoot, Shelley, Firth, Atomic City, Idaho Falls, Ammon, Rigby and Rexburg being on Tuesday.

Pocatello experienced a very brief snow shower on Sunday morning and many of East Idaho's higher elevation areas including Island Park, Ashton, Arco, Craters of the Moon, Tetonia, Victor and Driggs could also see snow showers with little accumulation on Sunday afternoon and Sunday night.

There's a better chance of snow and rain throughout East Idaho's mountains on Monday, and by Tuesday those chances improve even more and the precipitation could even fall on the region's lower elevation towns and cities.

The greatest chance for snow across East Idaho is on Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night.

But in the places that do see snow Sunday, Monday and/or Tuesday, accumulations are forecast to likely be less than a half-inch, even in East Idaho's mountains.

It's also possible that rain instead of snow will fall on East Idaho Monday and Tuesday or that the snow will be mixed with rain.

There's far less certainty concerning the expected precipitation Sunday through Tuesday in East Idaho than there is regarding the below-freezing temperatures.

The areas impacted by the Sunday night and Monday morning freeze warning include Pocatello, Chubbuck, Firth, Blackfoot, American Falls, Aberdeen, Shelley, Fort Hall, Idaho Falls, Ammon, Burley, Rupert, Heyburn, Paul, Declo, Oakley and Shoshone.

The weather service said, "A freeze warning means sub-freezing temperatures are imminent or highly likely. These conditions will kill crops and other sensitive vegetation."

East Idaho is not alone in experiencing this dose of winter in late April.

Blizzard warnings, winter storm warnings, high wind warnings and winter weather advisories are in effect in Montana; winter storm warnings, winter storm watches, high wind warnings and hazardous weather alerts are in effect in Wyoming; freeze warnings and hazardous weather alerts are in effect in eastern Washington state; freeze warnings are in effect in northeastern Oregon; and all of Utah is under a hazardous weather alert.
