Rescuers in two parishes save cats, dogs, livestock

No one had the time to build an ark before the torrential rains and subsequent flooding, but animals still were rescued.

Animal shelters in Iberia and St. Martin parishes are overflowing with rescued pets and livestock.

Cheyenne Nezat, an agent with the St. Martin Parish animal shelter, told the story of a rescued cow now grazing in the area behind the shelter.

cow in water up to its neck was reported to the shelter and a rescue plan was developed. Workers and volunteers went to the house, swam to the cow, lifted it into a boat and then loaded it into a trailer for transport.

The cow was not in the best of shape when it arrived at the shelter. The cow was watched overnight by vigilant eyes.

“She pulled through,” Nezat said.

Nezat said the shelter has seen a large influx of cats since the flood. Some cats were rescued as they were seen struggling to swim and others were brought in by people who found the cats dropped off in front of their flooded homes in sacks.

“I guess people were trying to drown them, I’m not sure,” Nezat said.

The shelter recently made more room for flood rescue animals by transporting some of its animals to shelters in Florida and Washington.

Mark A. Boudreaux, supervising agent of St. Martin Parish animal services, said that the shelter has taken in 43 animals since Aug. 11.

“Everything,” he said. “Horses, pigs, cattle, chicken, but mostly cats and dogs. Most of the animals we’ve recovered we’ve identified the owner and made arrangements.”

Boudreaux stressed the rescued flood animals are safe and not in danger of being euthanised. Boudreaux said he understands the plight of evacuees in shelters who are unable to retrieve their pets right away.

“It’s not their fault. The rain came down and the water came up,” Boudreaux said. “It’s hard enough for everyone. Why make it harder?”

Iberia Parish animal shelter manager Sonia Tauzin said she has seen a considerable influx of cats and dogs since the flooding, but the animals have all been rescues.

“It’s a high intake,” Tauzin said.  “It puts a lot of animals in danger (of euthanasia). Owners need to stay on top of it.”

This cow in the 1500 block of Prairie Highway in St. Martin Parish was rescued by volunteers with the St. Martin Parish Volunteer Fire Department, among others.  The cow's owner has been found and the animal will be picked up today, according to Mark Boudreaux, an official with the St. Martin Parish government.
