Chaney, Lamar, and Tsarukyan Attend National League of Cities 2013 Congress of Cities and Exposition

November 13, 2013 (Moscow, Idaho) - City of Moscow, Idaho Mayor Nancy Chaney, City Councilmember Tom Lamar, and Human Rights Commission member and University of Idaho student Ruben Tsarukyan are attending the National League of Cities (NLC) 2013 Congress of Cities and Exposition November 13 through 16.  This year's event will showcase the dynamic ways cities are driving change and finding successful solutions to the most pressing challenges in local government.  City officials and staff from across the country will come together in Seattle, Washington for a unique opportunity to share best practices and learn strategies to promote local economic and financial health, improve the built and natural environment, and ensure quality of life for all city residents.  NLC represents the interests of more than 19,000 cities and towns across the country.  Chaney notes, "It is a rare opportunity to have such a well-respected and so large a conference with an estimated 3,300 attendees in such close proximity to Moscow."

Chaney has been invited to participate as a panelist at two sessions at the event including Creating Active Transportation Infrastructures that Promote Walking and Biking and at the Closing General Session, discussing ways cities have successfully leveraged local resources for economic development befitting community identity and resources.

Tsarukyan and Chaney are particularly engaged with the University Communities Council, on whose steering committee Chaney serves and for which she previously served two terms as president. At Wednesday, November 13 meeting held on the University of Washington campus they heard from eight prominent representatives from the business and development community, campus, neighborhood residents, and local government involved with the University District Livability Partnership and the Only in Seattle place-based economic development coalition. Chaney explains, "The message was clear: Moscow and the University of Idaho are on the right track to compete for today's workforce that increasingly looks for quality of life, cultural vitality, innovation clusters, educated workforce, and a great social vibe as desirable for establishing their homes and businesses."
