[Vision2020] Fwd: FW: Marijuana in Idaho Training: Medical, Media & Misconceptions

Sunil,

You've hit on a couple of reasons why I think the War on Drugs is an
abject failure and should be abolished:

1. It isn't working.

2. It's way too expensive.

But there are other reasons as well that I would like to throw into the
conversation:

3. It's part of the War on the Individual. I believe that people should
be able to make their own choices in life, good or bad. Only when the
choices affect others should they be regulated in any way (such as the
DUI laws). It's the same reason I'm against the large soda ban in New York.

4. It's criminalizing an otherwise law-abiding segment of our
population. Recreational use of a drug should not lead to a person
being thrown into the general population in our prisons. Especially a
relatively benign drug like marijuana. It tends to ruin a person's
upward mobility, and can force people into further crime as they become
disconnected from our society.

5. It's created a dangerous black market that gives money ultimately
into the hands of some of the most dangerous people on the planet.
There is no regulation there, and it brings violence into the equation.
If marijuana were legal to use and legal to grow, the worst of the black
market would disappear overnight. Or at least as soon as the first crop
came in.

6. The money that is flowing into the hands of the cartels in Mexico and
South America could be flowing into our government's coffers instead,
through taxation or state-run stores, as could the money being spent on
enforcement (which isn't a small number).

I've not bought into the mystique of the marijuana culture, and have no
desire to even try it. I do believe it would be better for our society,
though, if the War on Drugs were stopped.
