Definition of "entitlement: An entitlement is a guarantee of access to benefits based on established rights or by legislation.
Under the Social Security Act, those who work a minimum number of quarters are guaranteed corresponding benefits. Only the conservatives and their echo machine could make "entitlement" a dirty word.

I'm sorry, but I don't consider Social Security and compensation for veterans "federal entitlements". People worked hard for that, many even die before they get any of what they invested back. It is their money, not a hand out.
A hand out is when the government gives something to someone that didn't do work or invest something they produced to earn it. Entitlements should go to those that cannot work. And we should all be willing to give a little of what we have to those with the misfortune of not being able to work a job due to age or disability. If you aren't even willing to give just a little to those with a true disability or advanced age, you are still not able to call yourself a fiscal conservative or free market capitalist, you are just a monumental selfish jackass.

Below are a few facts — and charts — to consider. Mitt Romney is correct that about half of all Americans now live in a household that receives some sort of federal government benefit. And that number has risen during the Obama years. On the other hand, a large chunk of this money goes toward the elderly and disabled. And most entitlement benefits flow to the middle class—which, judging by polls, tends to split evenly between Obama and Romney.
