Thanks to tax laws and perverted ways accountants have redefined certain
definitions and practices, HP will make an even bigger profit than if it
had sold the units outright.

The simple case using round hypothetical values:

Case 1:  Outright Sale:

Cost of laptop to manufacture and deliver:   $800
Price:                                                           $1100
Profit:                                                             $300

Case 2: Rental:
Cost of laptop to manufacture and deliver:   $800
Price:                                                           $1100
Initial Profit:                                                   $300

Depreciation taken after 4 years:                    $800
Final Profit:                                                  $1100

This will also help you understand why auto dealers/manufacturers prefer
leasing to selling.
