[Vision2020] Moscow federal building likely headed for auction

If that’s accurate, then it would seem to be a significant financial gamble not only due to all the serious deferred maintenance issues & expenses, but also because schools aren’t a permitted principle use in the CB zoning district and thus require a CUP.  

 

AFAIK, existing CUPs from any other locations aren’t transferrable.

 

I’ve not paid much attention to zoning code in a few years, so perhaps things have changed, but those interested in the topic can read more here:

And, given the City’s prior experience with certain entities that have an established history of thumbing their noses at the City’s zoning rules, I can’t imagine it would be stupid enough to fall for the old, “But we didn’t know and we’ve already purchased the property!” whine.

 

OTOH, stranger things have certainly happened in the City.

Scuttlebutt from a reliable source tells me that a local school is not only interested in the federal building, but has been measuring its indoor spaces.

I think the State of Idaho, specifically the Department of Administration, should add this building to its roster of properties available for State of Idaho service. I don't know exactly how much space is available within the building that might be redirected to other uses, but some functions, such as information system redundancy and security, don't necessarily require large amounts of space, though they should have space in significantly different locations than their primary operations.

Whether local State of Idaho offices might be consolidated there is another consideration, though parking around the Post Office might militate against offices with significant traffic being relocated.

A responsible seller should be encouraged to remove any now undesirable asbestos prior to the building being offered for sale. Let's remember this building was constructed for its first customer, the United States government. It is not unreasonable to expect that the US government, as a responsible party representing all of us, will act responsibly to remove known dangers from the building before it is offered for sale and alternative uses.

It seems to me that if the federal Government Services Administration is reluctant to operate in such a responsible manner that the local Congressman, and the state's two U.S. Senators, should be called upon to consult with the U.S. GSA to encourage responsible asbestos removal, and any other reasonably necessary pre-sale repairs and refurbishment.

It's been over a quarter of a century since an incumbent U.S. Senator had a field office in that building. It would be nice to discover that we would be as well served if one still chose to be there.
