"OK, there's more to my position."--Sunil
Thank you, Sunil. I knew that there was. I agree with much of your assessment and reasoning on the surface and as general policy. However, even if all true, it doesn't change our options for dealing with the situations at hand.
Your position isn't really a meaningful or thought out position unless it involves a different particular course of action.
What do you propose we do different that has a positive or better outcome, Sunil?
Do you propose no action? Let the terrorists control the region while planning and organizing for future attacks on the US and others?
Or do you have a new specific action that we can take that comes closer to your intended conclusion of the conflict?

OK, there's more to my position.
I think we need to stop thinking we can stop people from hating us by killing civilians and thinking that will make them stop hating us. It won't stop them from wanting to do something about it.
We are fools to think we can occupy Afghanistan and kill its people, and make them think they shouldn't fight us. The most natural response to an occupation is to fight it. Well, I suppose there's 'take it quietly,' too. Ever seen the people of Afghanistan take that approach? We've been there 11 years now, and we are no further ahead. We prop up an illegitimate, puppet government, and define as the enemy the people who don't recognize it. That policy continues to be the failure it has always been.
By bombing Pakistanis over the objection of the Pakistani government, we only breed more hatred towards us. Do you think they should love us for it? Do you really think they won't hate us for it? When we kill innocent people we only inspire more to rise up. We are destabilizing a government that has a nuclear arsenal. Are we even bothering to look down the road at the disaster that can cause?
It's bad policy for purely pragmatic reasons, let alone the immorality of killing these people. And let's be clear: since 2001, we're the ones killing thousands of people. Let's look in the mirror.

Donovan,
I think whatever we do should be permissible under our Constitution and our laws.
I think that's clear.
Is that what you support?

Sunil,
Your position is not clearly stated in regards to what you think we should do about terrorists.
Is it your logic that we declare war and send troops to die in every country a terrorist can ride his camel into and pitch a tent? Or that we allow these people to continue to terrorize and kill thousands of innocent people?
Is there a third plausible solution the President and the entire world is missing that you can see, I mean besides we all hold hands and sing Kumbaya?

Yeah, Tom, those damn friggin' drones. You really think this story changes my mind? Really?
How 'bout we don't do either? Huh, Tom? How 'bout we neither bomb a country we haven't declared war against, or send in troops?
How's that for friggin' novel?
Huh?
And sure, we don't give a shit how many people we kill there, do we? No one's counting them, or at least reporting them here.
Oh, I forgot: Now that Obama's the executioner in chief, it's all okay, right? It was only wrong when someone with an 'R' after his name was in charge?

Them dang drones, huh Sunil?
Kinda makes one wonder how many names would have been added to my weekly "Human Toll" posting had troops been sent on this mission instead of a drone, huh?
