Having neighbors like Gritman is very comforting and reassuring. Thanks for being there, GMC.

Gritman to pay taxes on building
MOSCOW - Gritman Medical Center will pay property taxes on the recently purchased federal building in Moscow, although that could change if the hospital ever opens clinical facilities there.
Gritman spokeswoman Kelly O'Neill said the hospital is only exempt from property taxes on its facilities that are directly related to its health care mission.
"At this point, there will be nothing there that is a core hospital service," O'Neill said. "But it's premature to say what the space will be used for."
The federal government was exempt from paying property tax when it owned the 38-year-old building.
Gritman was the winning bidder in the U.S. General Services Administration's online auction of the government surplus building earlier this year. The auction drew several bids, but the hospital prevailed with an offer of $2.4 million.
B.J. Swanson, chairwoman of the Gritman board of directors, said she expects the hospital to close on the sale sometime in the first half of January.
Hospital officials said they plan to use much of the 9,000 square feet of vacant space in the building for offices, and have no immediate plans to locate any health care services there.
The four-story office building on the east side of downtown Moscow currently houses the city's main post office, and several other tenants from federal, state and county government. O'Neill said each tenant will have to renew its lease after Gritman takes possession of the building.
But the tenants have all expressed interest in staying in the building, she said, and are currently in the process of negotiating lease rates.
She said several prospective new tenants have also expressed interest in leasing space, but they prefer to remain unidentified until agreements are final. The hospital has hired local property management firm Palouse Properties to negotiate leases.
