LETTER TO THE EDITOR: No more important cause

September 14, 2011

I am responding to Henry Johnston's His View column (Opinion, Aug. 30) and his disapproval of those who exercised civil disobedience over the megaloads coming through Moscow.

Johnston, I'm not a hippie and certainly don't smoke pot. The 1960s ended 40 years ago when I was 5. I am conservative.

If I get arrested, I will do so because of my grave concern about climate change.

The Exxon megaloads are a symbol of planetary destruction. These loads will be used to extract oil in an energy-intense way, spewing CO2 into our already overheated atmosphere.

Ninety-seven percent of climate scientists are in consensus that climate change is occurring.

In a recent article on the stunning disintegration of a Greenland glacier, Rep. Edward Markey said: "Scientists, skeptical by both nature and training, always urge a dose of caution when looking at any one event as evidence of climate change. This level of professional skepticism is what makes the overwhelming scientific consensus that climate change is real and caused by man all the more powerful.

"Take a step back we see a mosaic that could not be clearer. Our world is becoming less hospitable with every passing year."

Those who have been concerned about climate change for decades have called their congressmen, voted and been involved. They are performing civil disobedience and nonviolent resistance because they believe that our nation's laws are unjust and harmful.

The megaloads are a symbol of tragic injustice we are inflicting on our children by changing our climate and polluting our planet.

A group here in Moscow has joined with others across the nation in standing up bravely against this Canadian tar sands project.

Please look at this year's natural disasters, including heat waves, flooding and drought (largely predicted by climate science). There is no more important cause.

"When all is said and done, have you done or said enough? Have you just gone along for the ride, or have you steered destiny's hotrod? When you leave this world, did you make it any better than it was when you arrived? All you need is all you've got: your wits and the clothes on your back. Your epitaph is yours to earn. Your legacy is yours to make."
