MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
The responsibilities of the chair are twofold.  The primary responsibility is to promote the interests and welfare of the department in teaching, research, and service.  Besides the routine administration of the department, his/her responsibilities include assisting higher administration in assigning and evaluating the services of each faculty member, and providing for faculty participation in matters of academic policy and personnel.  The chair will preside at geography faculty meetings; appoint various committees as specified in Article 5 of the Geography Department By-Laws; report to the geography faculty, when appropriate, on administrative decisions affecting the department; and, in general, keep the geography faculty informed of developments within the department. (See Article III, Section 4 of COS By-Laws.)  Approximate breakdown of responsibility:  Teaching & Advising 25%, Scholarship & Creative Activities 20%, Outreach & Extension 5%, University Service & Leadership 50%.
             
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Doctorate in Geography or a related discipline.
Tenured faculty member at the University of Idaho.
DESIRABLE CHARACTERISTICS:
Evidence of effective leadership
Evidence of and administrative skills
Dedication to the democratic process and faculty governance
Currently active research program
Evidence of obtaining external funding
Commitment to fund raising
Excellent communication skills
Commitment to excellence in teaching
Strength of letters of recommendation
