Dinosaurs with no cell phone? I didn't know any of them had cell phones. Although if they had Tracfone reception it might explain their extinction.

Very funny...

Only dinosaurs with no cell phone might need this info (such as I),
but there are currently functioning outdoor pay phones next to
Safeway, at the corner of Styner-Lauder/Hwy. 95 by Arbys, and next to
Winco.  University Inn had indoor pay phones in the lobby, maybe they
still do, as did Walmart, which I bet will have them again when they
re-open in Moscow.  I suspect there are other pay phone locations
locally, but the main downtown Moscow post office recently got rid of
their pay phone.

Free public local access phones are at the U of I SUB, Commons and
library (fishbowl), dial 9 for access outside the U of I; also the
Moscow Food Co-Op and Moscow Public Library.  All also allow long
distance calls if using a calling card with no extra fee for the use
of the public access phone; mine (MCI) costs about 3 cents a minute
for US long distance nation wide.  However, using a calling card or a
coin payed call at a pay phone is foolishly expensive, of course.  But
in an emergency, I think 911 works at a pay phone no charge, and toll
free (800, 888) calls go through directly just as though calling from
a home phone.

As far as phone scams, of any sort, I almost never answer my phone
directly, unless I know someone I know is planning to call, exactly
because of the volume of phoney scam calls, wrong numbers, robo
political calls.  I've received numerous calls allegedly about my
credit card for years, but never listended to any of the recorded
messages for more than a few seconds.  My answering machine is my
secretary.

I assume any call recorded by my answering machine, claiming to be
associated with any business I am associated with, or potentially
might want to be associated with, is potentially a scam, unless I am
expecting the call, and should be verified by other means, if it seems
credible there is any good reason, by independently contacting
customer service for the business in question, by phone or e-mail.

It takes about two or three seconds of listening to the unwanted
recorded message before I hit the delete button.

It seems impossible to block all scam artists, whether snail mail,
phone or Internet based.  If everyone ignored them, they'd be out of
business.
