[Vision2020] Megaloads Could Skip U.S. on Rail-Truck Canada Route

This Spokesman-Review article contains a serious factual error in the
following statement.  Canada's tar sands proven oil reserves currently
surpass Venezuela's proven oil reserves.

Perhaps the author of this article does not fully understand the
definition of a "proven oil reserve" compared to potentially
recoverable; and also the implications of accepting potentially
recoverable oil as commercially proven, insofar as this would impact
the rankings of nations oil reserves.  If accepting potential
unconventional oil reserves as commercially recoverable, the US might
surpass Saudi Arabia and Canada, due to the gigantic shale deposits in
Wyoming, Utah and Colorado (read below).

While potential development of known but currently not considered
commercially recoverable oil, heavy oil, shale or tar sand resources
(read about "unconventional" oil below), or undiscovered estimated
resources, is an important issue, proven commercially recoverable oil
reserves are monitored and listed by nation at the following CIA
website.  Venezuela is seventh on the list of nations proven oil
reserves, Canada is second:

While the tar sands in Canada are not the entire proven oil reserve in
Canada, they are nearly all of it
( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athabasca_oil_sands ),
thus Canada's proven tar sands oil reserve is far greater than
Venezuela's proven oil reserves, assuming the CIA estimations to be
correct.

Venezuela has a huge known heavy oil resource, but this is not now
considered a proven commercially recoverable oil resource:

barrels.

Tar Sands, which can be recovered via surface mining or in-situ
collection techniques. Again, this is more expensive than lifting
conventional petroleum but not prohibitively so. Canada's Athabasca
Tar Sands is the best known example of this kind of unconventional
reserve. Estimated reserves: 1.8 trillion barrels.

Oil Shale requires extensive processing and consumes large amounts of
water. Still, reserves far exceed supplies of conventional oil.

If we considered all of the potential heavy oil in Venezuela as a
proven commercially recoverable oil resource, it would surpass Saudi
Arabia and Canada's currently estimated proven oil reserves, thus
perhaps Venezuela could be the first nation on the list of oil bearing
nations; and along the same lines, if the US shale resources in Utah,
Wyoming and Colorada were considered a proven commercially recoverable
oil resource, it would also surpass Saudi Arabia's oil resources,
rendering the US ahead of Saudi Arabia in oil reserves.
