Judge begins taking testimony in megaloads case

BOISE - The fate of ExxonMobil's shipments of giant oil equipment along
U.S. Highway 12 is at stake as the Idaho Transportation Department opened
hearings over foes objections of the loads.

Today's hearing began with testimony from people who own businesses along
the scenic roadway. Reflections Inn owner Ruth May said she believes the
shipments will delay guests from reaching her hotel and put her long-term
investment in the motel in jeopardy.

ExxonMobil's Imperial Oil division aims to ship dozens of the megaloads to
the Kearl Oil Sands of southern Alberta, Canada. The loads will start at
the port in Lewiston, cross north central Idaho and into Montana.

ITD officials have approved a traffic control plan for the loads, but the
actual permits await the outcome of the hearing and recommendation by
hearing officer Duff McKee.
