State board decision may signal end to UI-BSU rivalry

COEUR D'ALENE � A divided State Board of Education narrowly
approved the delegation of collegiate athletic scheduling to each school's
chief executive this morning, helping support Boise State University's
desire to discontinue is decades-long football rivalry with the University
of Idaho.

Over the protest of UI President Duane Nellis, the board voted 5-3 to give
full authority over game schedules to university and college presidents.
The three board members who opposed the move were Paul Agidius of Moscow,
Emma Atchley of Ashton and Don Soltman of Twin Lakes.

The board is meeting today at North Idaho College in Coeur d'Alene.

When the schools departed the Big West for separate conferences more than
ten years ago, the board set a policy that stipulated that the schools
still schedule an annual game to promote school spirit and community
involvement.

BSU is leaving the Western Athletic Conference for the Mountain West next
year, and school officials have stated they want to end the intrastate
rivalry with the UI due to BSU football's emergence on a national level
over the last few years.

impacts Moscow economically?
