[Vision2020] Security Contract

Wayne, it's even crazier:  my understanding (from experts in the field) is
that hiring AlliedBarton is sheer fiscal irresponsibility.  Why?  Because if
the UI is concerned about the alcohol related deaths and injuries at the
frat houses, those frat houses are on private property, so the AB guards
won't be able to stick a toe onto that private property without invitation,
something that's apparently common knowledge in the nation's higher ed
community of security & safety professionals.  This is why historically
private security companies like AlliedBarton are relegated to "property
protection" roles and staffing desks at university-owned housing to check
who goes in & out of university-owned property.

 

I suppose if each property owner negotiated with AB to provide services, the
story would be different.  What do you think the odds are that's going to
happen???

 

Now, if anyone has information to the contrary, please share because while
the experts I've spoken with are very familiar with safety & security issues
on college campuses, they don't have knowledge about the UI specifically.
Does the UI own the frat & sorority houses around campus or are they the
property of the nationals?

Here's part of what I don't understand about the UI security issue:  If this
was an open bid process, what was left to negotiate/discuss, let alone
negotiate/discuss in secret?  Shouldn't the bid terms have clearly spelled
everything out?  If not, then the bid process needs to be done again,
correctly (which excludes Lloyd Mues).

 

I fail to see how unarmed security personnel are going to help with the
alcohol problem which allegedly is part of the motivation.  These
unfortunate pseudocops are very likely to end up being great objects of
ridicule and pranking especially if they to concentrate on the Greek
community as has been alleged.  [That's what has happened elsewhere.]  

 

The alcohol problem has many facets including the need for an intelligent
(perhaps too much to expect now from the present UI personnel concerned) and
very persistent, deep reaching education and prevention program.  More
enforcement is clearly needed.  Why not leave that further enforcement to
the professionals, the MPD, with a little help with closer communication,
and not with a security firm [AlliedBarton] which simple Googling shows are
much less than stellar in performance and integrity.
