Deary teens sentenced to 30 days of detention, three years probation

Two Deary teens who admitted to shooting at several chip trucks and
passenger vehicles were sentenced by Lewis County Magistrate Stephen
Calhoun to 30 days of juvenile detention at the Nez Perce Juvenile
Detention Center in Lewiston. They will also serve three years of
probation — the maximum allowed for a juvenile facing these charges —
effective immediately.

Austin Rickert, 14, and Austin Medlock, 14, each admitted to two counts of
unlawful discharge of a firearm at a passenger vehicle, as well as one
count of unlawful discharge of a firearm at a vehicle at nine chip trucks
after they shot at the vehicles Jan. 22 near Helmer.

Rickert faced an additional count of altering a firework.

Latah County Prosecuting Attorney Bill Thompson asked for a lesser
sentencing of placing the two boys within the Department of Juvenile
Correction program where they could obtain therapy and live in a
group-home setting.

So . . .

As punishment for firing upon passing vehicles on Highway 8, the two boys
are sent to bed without supper and told not to do it again.

Had somebody been injured (or worse), these boys may have been grounded
for a week (maybe longer, huh?).

Perhaps now, instead of firing at passing cars, they'll be firing at the
neighbor's cat or dog.

JEEESH!!!

Seeya at the polls, Moscow.
