[Vision2020] Is there an Idaho?

My daughter (who is half Korean) attended Humboldt State for two years.
(Northern California) She hung out with quite a few Hawaiians there.
Since she had similar skin color, many thought she was Hawaiian also.

One kid asked, "Where are you from?"

She replied, "Idaho."

His answer - "Which island is that?"

Wow.

Our son went to college (track scholarship) in Nebraska. When he told
people he was from Idaho, they thought he had a speech impediment and said
"Iowa" or "Ohio". Then they finally got it, and began asking him about the
racist enclaves and how bad it is here for people of color....on the other
hand, he introduced them to ham and jam sandwiches and how to really do both
baked potatoes and lentils. Since all these folks were athletes, they much
appreciated cheap bulk food---tasty just made it better. His apartment
became the place for student athletes from midddle school through college to
gather for weekend meals, and they quickly learned that Idahoans aren't the
racist nut cases we look like in the evening news. Food and teachable
moments---what's better than that?

This has nothing to do with anything, but I had to call Social Security
this morning. In dealing with the very nice, pleasant robot lady on the
phone, I was asked what state I was born in. I replied very clearly with
"Idaho". To which she pleasantly, if robotically, said, "I believe you
said Puerto Rico. Is that correct?" I said no, and she again asked me
which state I was born in. "I-D-A-H-O", I repeated clearly. Pause. "I'm
sorry, I can't understand you. We'll just skip this part." I'm not sure we
exist.
