It was 44 years ago today that a couple of guys were arrested by a
Stockbridge, Mass., police officer - William "Obie" Obanhein - for
illegally dumping some garbage removed from the church in Great
Barrington, Massachusetts owned by none other than Alice M. Brock.

A year later, one of the litterers was called up for a draft examination,
and rejected as unfit for military service as a result of a criminal
record — consisting in its entirety of a single arrest, court appearance,
50-dollar fine and clean-up order for littering and creating a public
nuisance on Thanksgiving Day in 1965,

A couple of years subsequently, one of those two litterers, Arlo Davy
Guthrie, wrote the infamous song that he performed on November 26, 2005,
in comemoration of the 40th anniversary of the incident at . . .

The former church where the story begins, located in Great Barrington,
Massachusetts. The building later became the Guthrie Center. The
restaurant itself is roughly six miles north in Stockbridge,
Massachusetts.

“A lot of people think 'Alice's Restaurant' was an anti-war song. It's
not. It's an anti-idiot song,”

- Arlo Guthrie
