WSU grad gets marriage proposal
Erica Mettler got her diploma Saturday, and a marriage proposal, too.

Shortly after Mettler walked across the stage of Washington State
University’s Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum, her boyfriend met her in
the center aisle and knelt on one knee.

Many in the audience took note of the unfolding drama.

“Look! He’s proposing!” someone yelled. A moment later a speechless
Mettler nodded her acceptance and Devon Schefano slipped the ring on her
finger. As the two embraced, more cheers erupted across the coliseum.

Schefano, who joined the Marines in September 2003, has been to Iraq
several times. He returned home in March, but waited to propose until he
could first ask Mettler’s father for his blessing.

Hence the decision to pop the question on graduation day. “All of her
family would be here,” he said. “I knew it would be the perfect time.”
