Moscow police investigators have recently seen an increase in various
internet and e-mail scams. Most recently, an e-mail was circulating that
appeared to offer $150 from Wal-Mart for filling out a survey. The
attached survey form in the e-mail asked for credit card information
including PIN and security code.

 

We remind the public to never respond to any unsolicited e-mails. In
particular, never provide personal information, or banking information
unless you have specifically navigated on the internet to a known secure
business' website.

 

Consumers should also consider the use of single-use account numbers
provided by many banks and credit card companies. These are intended for
a single internet, mail-order, or phone purchase and shield your account
information.

 

Other common scams include:

 

Various lottery related scams; you can not win a lottery you did not
enter, and will never have to send money to collect legitimate winnings.

 

Overpayment for on-line auction or sale items (including room-mate
wanted). The scammer asks the victim to wire the overpaid amount and
provides a legitimate sounding name and address (may in fact be real).
The wired funds are collected overseas.

 

Shipping/billing scams: Contrary to the pitched story, UPS, FedEx, and
the USPS do cooperate and can ship to each other. They do not need you
to carry a package from one to the other. Research any billing or
payment processing jobs thoroughly and never agree to accept payment
into, or transfer money from, your personal accounts.
