"Three connected with 1997 parole office fire. A Latah County grand jury
handed down four indictments Wednesday in connection with a July 1997 fire
at the state Probation and Parole Office in Moscow.

University of Idaho student Matthew Jay Hohenstreet was arraigned in 2nd
District Court today and pleaded not guilty to two indictments. Defendants
Donald J. Stookey and Marci R. Gregg have yet to be arraigned but each are
charged through indictments handed down after six days of grand jury
testimony that began late last month.

Hohenstreet, a 25-year-old Jacksonville, Fla., native, is charged in three
counts in his first indictment. He is accused of conspiracy to commit
arson in the first degree, arson in the first degree and grand theft. The
second indictment charges Hohenstreet with perjury for lying under oath to
the grand jury Tuesday about his involvement in the July 12, 1997, fire."

"Naylor Farms’ two-year battle to develop its land 1.5 miles north of
Moscow has brought controversies to development and resource use to the
forefront.

The Latah County Zoning Commission recommended a conditional use permit to
the county commissioners July 12 after hearing more than six hours of
testimony from the applicant and the public, and making a site visit. Its
recommendation was based strictly on the sand and gravel mining plan, not
on the effect it could have on the aquifer systems or the water Naylor
would use to wash its rock."

"It seems the University of Idaho is so used to getting its way with the
city council that it didn't wait for the formality of a vote on its plan
to take over enforcement of parking on campus streets. The INKster learned
UI officials sent out a letter to employees July 12 announcing its new
parking plan -- including an end to free parking on streets. Only one
problem: The council wasn't scheduled to take up the plan until July 16.

The council did ultimately allow a one-year trial of the parking plan, but
only after council member Linda Pall objected to the university's
premature announcement."

"University of Idaho President Bob Hoover said he had taken his name out
of the running for the presidency of Nevada State College at Henderson. He
had been named as a semifinalist July 12.

Hoover announced Friday he will remain at the UI for four more years and
retire at the end of 2007.

'The sun really came up today and I felt good for the first time in some
time,' Hoover said two days after meeting privately with Gov. Dirk
Kempthorne in a session designed to talk the UI president out of taking a
job in Nevada."
