For Immediate Release:

Safe Routes to School Polar Walk

Moscow, Idaho, January 27, 2009 - The City of Moscow is proud to partner
with the University of Idaho Safe Routes to School (SR2S) Program for
the first "Polar Walk," to be held Thursday, January 29. This event is
one of four being organized in the coming year designed to kick start
healthy habits and encourage riding, rolling and walking to school.

All elementary schools, including the Moscow Charter School, plan to
participate and will serve hot chocolate from 8 a.m. until school
begins. Students who live too far to walk the entire distance are
encouraged to have parents drive part of the way, park within a smaller
distance of the school and walk with their child. University of Idaho
students will be at each site to assist and cheer the students on.

Students and parents are encouraged to check with their schools as other
programs and options for participating may vary from school to school.
Some schools have organized a "walking school bus" a SR2S concept that
allows for flexibility in options to walk to school. For instance, the
Moscow Charter School will provide an option for students to be bussed
to a location closer to the school, and will have adult volunteers to
walk with students from that location.

SR2S's purpose includes encouraging students K-8th grade in fitness, by
riding, rolling and walking to school, as well as in safety by
decreasing congestion at school sites, thus improving student safety and
reducing pollution.

For more information please contact Grants Coordinator Alisa Stone,
208-883-7600 or University of Idaho SR2S Coordinator Christa Davis at
208-885-7921.
