Here's a hint: There are no Gates, Buffets, Carnegies or Rothschilds in my family tree.
But my brother once won $6,000 at a casino, so it's kinda like it.

Arnold further informs us:
"And no Keely, we will not have to worry about me ever being your caregiver, you will have to leave Latah because you don't make enough to afford a caregiver in Latah."
So, Arnie . . . Just what exactly is Keely Emerine-Mix's financial worth? I've started an off-list pool. I have conducted some rather meticulous calculations and have narrowed her financial worth to a somewhat sizeable range. Perhaps you can help us out. How much do you charge for caregiving?

But of course you do. You specifically stated, "you don't have problems." What an arrogant statement. I may or may not have problems; but the truth is YOU simply do not know. I do appreciate your concern for those whose problems you recognize. I think you do a great and wonderful service for them, but you make pretty bold statements about folks whom you really do not know.
And one last point: if you don't know me well enough to define what I have done for many years as a caregiver; then don't make assumptions about my motives and my deeds. I have been a caregiver longer than you have been alive......

Keely and Sue,
Sue, I never made the boast of being all-knowing, so please don't put such nonsense into your emails.
Part of being a caregiver is knowing when and when not to help someone, and when that need is more serious or less serious.
Knowing when to help a person in a wheelchair, versus taking away their independence to open a door for themselves, is a learned concept. It is important that a person remain as independent as possible for as long as possible.
Sometimes you get people that CAN do things for themselves but want someone to do it for them. If someone always does do it for them they lose their independence and have a declining quality of life, and a shortened life span.
Same thing happens with pain medication. If you cry wolf over ever little pain to get a dose of pain killers, your body builds an early natural resistance to the medication, and not tolerance to pain. So people that cry wolf, end up in serious pain most the day because they maximized the amount of painkillers they can take earlier than most people. People that give pain medication have to determine the real level of pain, verses a person with low tolerance to discomfort so they do not have a patient they cannot help in later stages of an illness..
I have seen people sweating and screaming in pain, because they wanted the high of the pain killers and they don't work for them when they are in real pain. All we can do is hold their hand, make them as comfortable as possible, and sympathize with them.
I would imagine both of you, as caregivers, would be administrating the pain meds too early, and doing things for people when they should doing them for themselves.
You are not thinking ahead, you are just reacting emotionally with no long term thinking about the consequences of your actions.
If any of you gave a rip about those in real need, rather then just reacting to any and all things, you would have fought to keep Latah's ONLY skilled nursing home, and the only opportunity for level 4 and 5 care level patients without private insurance to stay close to family and friends.
This sidewalk thing is very frivolous. And is not addressing any real problems. It is whining because you aren't interested in the real problems of the community, nor are you offering or doing anything about it. It is just something to complain about. Yes, it sucks stomping through slush. But it isn't a serious problem to waste taxpayer monies on during the worst economic recession since WWII.
And no Keely, we will not have to worry about me ever being your caregiver, you will have to leave Latah because you don't make enough to afford a caregiver in Latah. The facility you would have qualified for is shut down now. How ironic huh?
Best Regards,
Donovan

I shudder to think that, if I were ever under Donovan's care, he might not judge me and my problems sufficient for his compassion. On the other hand, it appears that the only suffering human beings around us are all in his care, which makes me think he must be very tired, indeed. Perhaps that contributes to his sniping.

And My God, we are fortunate to have someone in the community who can fit all its citizens into the appropriate categories--either deserving or whiners according to your determination. I would submit that you are neither all-wise nor all-knowing, but you appear to believe you are sufficient unto the task.
Best regards, my eye,
Sue H.

Sue,
You are correct. I am insensitive to the needs of the lazy able bodied who "think" they have problems because of some snow on a sidewalk.
I deal with people with real problems. I work with people on chemo therapy, dialysis, and other life threatening illnesses. I deal with parents with children with cases of Autism. I work with people that are missing arms, legs, and are in advanced stages of Alzheimer's or dementia. I work for people that have only $80-$41 a month after medical costs are paid. I deal with families losing their children, mothers, brothers, sisters, and spouses of 60+ years. I deal with a man who was stationed in Hiroshima at the end of WWII. I work with Veterans that cannot get proper medical care for their war injuries.
You don't have problems, I don't have problems, people fighting for removal of every snow flake don't have real problems, You bet I am insensitive to the whiners and complainers that don't have a CLUE as to what pain, suffering, inconvenience and loss really is. They have everything handed to them, and want future generations to pay for their luxury and squandering without a bit of understanding of what sacrifice is about.
I watched Latah County kick out everyone of its elderly people in their care by closing down its only long term facility. I saw no compassion from the county, just greedy people wanting the building and how they could make money off of it. I didn't even see anyone mention the funerals of those that died shortly after their forced move.
You are right, I have no compassion for the lazy able bodied that want to waste taxpayers money while ignoring the needs of the truly disabled and those with real problems and challenges.
If you took all the whiners and complainers about the snow, gave them a shovel, they could solve their problem without the government or taxpayer monies. But they cannot, because they need the government to do anything and everything for them.
Best Regards,
Donovan

Bev and others,Personally I think too many people share Donovan's opinion (from an earlierpost:) if you don't like the snow, just move south. Contrary to what he feels, it is insensitive. To personalize a bit: we have spent most of our adult lives in Moscow. We raised 3 chidren here. We worked to make Moscow a better place for ourselves, our children, and others who love it despite it's winter weather. And now that we are retired we do leave in thewinter. But, to be honest, we know that isn't a very good solution--most people--the folks who live and work in Moscow, the elderly, the disabled, and others who just like the cold, deserve conditions that are safe for walking and travel. Before we left Norm did shovel our walks and driveway, only to have them plowed in with ice chunks he couldn't move. There were two days when we couldn't get out of our driveway even with 4 wheel drive because the berm that the snowplow left was simply immovable. So, Bev, you make a valuable point. The city needs to take care not to make things worse when clearing roads, and residents and business people need to take care of their walks so everyone feels safe using them.To say to Moscow residents, "If you don't like it, leave," simplyallows one to wash his hands of the problems instead of working toward solutions.>From one who admits she's glad to be out of the snow. (and in aDemocratic state--what a bonus.)Sue H.----- Original Message ----- From: "Bev Bafus" <bevbafus at verizon.net>To: <vision2020 at moscow.com>Sent: Wednesday, January 07, 2009 10:08 AMSubject: [Vision2020] plowing> Maybe I'm just obtuse, but I fail to see how taking the time to plowthe> snow BACK onto the main streets helps anything, except make tempers rise.>> Why not use the plow time to clear lanes that are still blocked?>> =======================================================> List services made available by First Step Internet,> serving the communities of the Palouse since 1994.> http://www.fsr.net> mailto:Vision2020 at moscow.com> =======================================================> ======================================================= List services made available by First Step Internet, serving the communities of the Palouse since 1994. http://www.fsr.net mailto:Vision2020 at moscow.com=======================================================
