Judy and Visionaries,
While I am glad that this overcame it's FIRST hurdle, and I am in favor of the U of I
charging
tuition and finally calling it tuition instead of "fees", I hope the citizens of Idaho,
who have to
approve any changes to the state constitution, vote NO and this proposed amendment goes
down in defeat.
You bashed Tom Trail for his lack of support of SJR 101, yet he was the ONLY elected
representative that responded to the veterans issue! Not a word from Shirley Ringo
speaking
"eloquently on behalf of" veterans and compliance with the state law even though she is
aware
of it! Really stings as I am a "blue dog" Democrat and it was the Republican
representative that
responded to me on the issue.
As long as the University of Idaho considers itself above the rest of the state in regards
to state
laws that are already on the books, in particular the way it deals with veterans, it can
stay in it's
current position. When there is a proposal to change the state constitution to bring the
University of Idaho into compliance with ALL of the state laws, I will actively campaign
for it's
passage. This amendment will still do nothing to bring it in compliance, and as such, I
will
actively campaign against it. They can't have it both ways! They either are a part of the
state
structure which allows them to charge tuition and they comply with all state laws, or
they're
not.
> Visionaries,
> Minutes ago the Idaho House overwhelmingly passed SJR 101, allowing the
> University of Idaho to formally charge tuition (instead of having to
> euphemistically call them fees).
> Rep. Shirley Ringo spoke eloquently on behalf of the University of Idaho and
> the need to level the playing field between the U of I and the state's other
> institutions of higher education.
> Even Rep. Grant Burgoyne, a freshman Democrat from Boise and U of I alum who
> opposed the measure, spoke at length in support of the U of I and of the
> contribution of higher education to the state's economic development.
> Not a peep from Rep. Tom Trail in support of the institution that is the
> economic lifeblood of our community.
