Latah County students favor Obama
Mock election results indicate the majority of Latah County students lean
to the left. In a two-day mock election this week, 55 percent of students
favored Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, for president. Sen. John McCain, R-
Ariz., received 42 percent of the votes. The remaining 3 percent were
divided between Ralph Nader, Chuck Baldwin and Bob Barr.
On an issues ballot distributed to Moscow, Paradise Creek Regional and
Troy high schools, students identified the economy, patriotism, education
and gas prices as the most important issues facing the country today.
The next most important issues are the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan,
education reform, border control, and same-sex marriage.
The students also were asked about leadership qualities theyd like to see
in a president, and overwhelmingly chose Strong decision-making skills.
And, if miracles could happen, local high school students would choose
Franklin D. Roosevelt to lead the country again. Students also voted on
state and county races.
The elections were sponsored by the nonpartisan League of Women Voters in
conjuction with next weeks National Student/Parent Mock Elections.
Whitman County mock student elections begin Monday.

"We're a town of about 23,000 with 10,000 college students. The college
students are not very active in local elections (thank goodness!)."
