Creating political cult figures is not without its problems.

Consider, for example, the Obama salute's creepy predecessor:

The last century saw enough personality cults that we don't need any
more and it's not likely that anyone can add a new wrinkle to the
deification of man.

But when your candidate does not have a legitimate record and his
background is steeped radicalism — the cult of personality is your
only option because if you tell the people the truth, they will not
vote for you.
