Now that I have been forewarned, I will avoid referring to your
children as "spawn" -- though it has never actually come up, I promise
- but I will confess that I have referred to my own children as
"spawn," and "rug rats," and "sproglets."  Usually, I am being
affectionate.  I use 'spawn" and "tadpoles" nearly interchangeably,
and tadpoles are cute.
