oops, since I know how cranky you get if I don't cross all my t's and dot all my i's...

From the Washington Post in 1985 - SHARON M. SCRANAGE, operations support assistant for the CIA stationed in Ghana and her Ghanaian boyfriend, MICHAEL SOUSSOUDIS, were charged on 11 July with turning over classified information, including the identities of CIA agents and informants, to Ghanaian intelligence officials.

It is reported that a routine polygraph test given to Scranage on her return to the US aroused CIA suspicions.

Following an internal investigation, Scranage agreed to cooperate with the FBI in order to arrest Soussoudis, a business consultant and permanent resident of the United States. According to one report, damaging information on CIA intelligence collection activities is likely to have been passed on by pro-Marxist Kojo Tsikata, head of Ghanaian intelligence, to Cuba, Libya, East Germany and other Soviet Bloc nations.

Indicted on 18 counts of providing classified information to a foreign country, Scranage subsequently pleaded guilty to one count under the espionage code and two counts of violating the Intelligence Identities Protection Act.

  Fifteen remaining charges were dropped.

On 26 November Scranage was sentenced to five years in prison. (This was later reduced to two years.) At the same time Soussoudis who had been charged with eight counts of espionage pleaded nolo contendere and was sentenced to 20 years. His sentence was suspended on the condition that he leaves the United States within 24 hours."

Several other publications appeared in the Washington Post, on the issue, including one on July 12, 1985, ("CIA Aide, Ghanaian Face Spy Counts"), and July 14, 1985, ("Routine Polygraph Opened Ghanaian Espionage Probe")

Looks like you're starting today off on the same losing note as you bailed on yesterday.

From your kindred spirits at The Daily Kos, a source that you should be extremely comfortable with...

"There has been only one person convicted under the Intelligence Identities Protection Act: Sharon Scranage in 1985. She confessed and got a 5-year sentence."

So much for your inference that prosecution's just can't happen under the act.

Hope your day improves from here on out,

Yeah, right. Perhaps, you can name other cases where an agent was outed followed by a prosecution of the outer.

My goodness, hansen ! This changes everything. I guess this means that our gal Val is in reality April Dancer, The mysterious girl from U.N.C.L.E. Hot diggity micro dot.

According to Fred Rustmann, a former CIA official in an article published in Time magazine on 031019:

." . . . . Rustmann describes Plame as an "exceptional officer" but says her ability to remain under cover was jeopardized by her marriage in 1998 to the higher-profile American diplomat."

Golly, married to Joe 'stand back, I'm a diplomat' Wilson April, 98. Novack breaks story July, 03 no more life threatening undercover polishing assignments in the espionage hot spots of the US embassy's of Brussels or Athens for five years. Active covert operative, my ass. I hear that when they catch a NOC in Belgium they withhold your waffles till they fly you home, couch no less! If there was even the slightest evidence that Plame was a covert operative you can rest assured charges would have been brought. They weren't. Case closed. You don't really do any better at making this case than your mentor, Wayne did. Imagine my surprise.

Your attention is invited to the attached PDF file titled "Correcting the Record on Valerie Plame" authored by Larry C. Johnson.

This document was downloaded from the House of Representative website at:

      http://www.oversight.house.gov/Documents/20050722113326-59442.pdf

Quoted below is a paragraph from the first page of this document.

"Although Val started off with official cover, she later joined a select

group of intelligence officers a few years later when she became a

NOC, i.e. a Non-Official Cover officer. That meant she agreed to

operate overseas without the protection of a diplomatic passport. She

was using cover, which we now know because of the leak to Robert

Novak, of the consulting firm Brewster-Jennings."

Nope. Certainly doesn't sound like janitorial work to me.

Well Wayne, this is becoming embarrassing. Perhaps you should hang it up, take a little nap and try again another day.

For starters why would I consider any thing from wikipedia to be the final word on anything? A site where the content can be altered by pretty much anyone with an opinion, a point of view, and some time on their hands (someone much like yourself) would hardly be the most definitive source for anyone's "reality" check.

Also considering that you, yourself, choose this particular article, I think that it's extremely telling that nowhere in the conclusions of the afore mentioned piece did the eight democrats and seven republicans (Hagel & Snowe hardly count as republicans) find any indication of wrong doing by the current administration. It should go without saying that there is no mention of the actual topic we had been discussing, Valerie Plame.

Now that we are actually back to the original topic at hand, allow me to reiterate. A janitor at the CIA is not a covert operative. A security guard at the CIA is not a covert operative. An analyst at the CIA is not a covert operative. After hearing Ms. Plame testify to congress, seeing the piece in Vanity Fair, watching her on CNN's Larry King, and listening to her idiot husband blowviate at length in various forums, it seems likely to me that what Ms. Plame really did at the agency was polish. Apples, brass, knobs, and her own reputation and sense of self-worth, and only one of those things did she do covertly.
