The Friday Letter
A Newsletter for University of Idaho Alumni and Friends Nov. 17, 2006
Dear Friends,
College of Engineering Dean Aicha Elshabini has received international
recognition for her academic and research efforts in microelectronic
engineering. She recently received the prestigious Daniel C. Hughes Jr.
Memorial Award for lifetime achievement in microelectronics from the
International Microelectronics Packaging Society. As the first woman to
receive this award, Elshabini joins the ranks of national leaders who have
made enormous contributions to the industry, including the inventor of LCD
technology and one of the principal investigators in the creation of the
motherboard.
According to Dean Elshabini, her research work doesn't make products, it
makes them work better and more efficiently. She has conducted research with
Motorola, Hewlett-Packard, Texas Instruments, Intel, Xerox, NASA and various
military groups. Her groundbreaking research includes work in the creation
of cellular technology, microwave radios and extensive battery research. But
Dean Elshabini still considers academics her greatest achievement, and says,
"Creating meaningful curriculum and watching students grow into professional
engineers is an amazing and satisfying experience."
Dean Elshabini joined the University of Idaho College of Engineering in June
of this year with an ambitious agenda, and we are proud of the recognition
she brings to the University as a renowned scholar whose work improves lives
everywhere.
Next week of course is Thanksgiving, a time for each of us to reflect on the
privileges and opportunities that we are fortunate to have, and to make an
effort to assist those in our communities who will benefit by a helping
hand. Many of our students will be returning home to spend Thanksgiving
recess with their families, and others will stay close to campus to gather
with friends. Karen and Logan join me in wishing you a wonderful
Thanksgiving.
