>From today's (January 13, 2006) Lewiston Tribune with a special thanks to
David Peckham and a vote of appreciation to Councilperson Ament for
instilling into the Moscow City Council something it so desperately lacked
in the past, a conscience.

Trib misses point

The Tribune was 0 for 2 on Jan. 5 concerning Moscow City Council's January 3
meeting. Neither reporter David Johnson nor editorial writer "T.H." [Tom
Henderson] got the point that when New Saint Andrews located downtown, it
was of violation of Moscow zoning ordinance, which was mysteriously
overlooked by city officials at the time.

The reasons colleges and educational institutions were prohibited from
downtown are parking and taxes. U of I (and New St. Andrews) don't pay
property taxes, and their students, faculty and staff don't park nearby to
shop, but to attend classes.

Johnson's story only quoted an NSA mouthpiece, who conducted their own
parking survey. How valuable is that information? Johnson should remember
that the previous occupant of the GTE building leased parking spaces just
west of Jackson Street for their employees.

Henderson arrogantly asserts that NSA downtown opponents are more concerned
about ideology than preserving downtown. You don't give a column inch to
consider that some may be serious about keeping our downtown from ending up
like Lewiston's.

The Tribune seems to enjoy fanning the flames of divisiveness, waving labels
of "liberals" in "hysteria." Isn't that hysterical?

Take care, Moscow.
