[Vision2020] Logging in Robinson Lake Park

Clear-cutting timber and selling it appears to be an option that the county
might be opting for, considering the standard that the Latah County Board of
Equalization has established for granting tax-exempt status.

 

Community Christian Ministries was granted tax-exempt status because,
although it was marketing and selling, its sales showed no measurable
profit.

 

Logos School was granted tax-exempt status because, although it admittedly
was renting out property to two private entities, its profits were
considered insufficient to deny the tax-exempt status.

 

As Arnold stated, "I think one of the best ways to support education is to
make successful private schools like Logos prosper through tax exemption."
I couldn't have said it better.  Thanks Arnold.

 

Now, if you will excuse me.  I understand that Paul Kimmel's commissioner
seat is up for reelection this year and I really must beat Christ Church to
the campaign trail.

Dear Visionaries--

 

Can anyone share information on the logging in Robinson Lake Park?  There's
a sign saying that it's being logged for a Latah County timber sale, and it
looks like the whole area around the amphitheater.  They also seem to have
marked a lot of live trees, more than timber management alone would justify.

 

Of course, we know the county's finances aren't exactly healthy--the
branches of the public library outside Moscow are threatened with closing or
drastically reduced hours, for example.  But are timber sales the best
option?  Of course, I have to wonder whether the businesses in downtown
Moscow currently enjoying the opportunity to make money tax-free might not
help alleviate the burden levied on less powerful and wealthy citizens out
in the county by paying their fair share, instead of expecting everyone else
to pick up their slack.
