UI SPONSORS COURSE, PUBLIC FORUM ON TERRORISM AND HOMELAND SECURITY
The 2004 summer session at UI Coeur d'Alene will feature a free public 
forum on terrorism and homeland security Wednesday, July 28, in Todd Hall 
on the North Idaho College campus. Rand C. Lewis will brief listeners on 
the nation's efforts to develop a strong homeland security system. 
"Homeland security is consuming a great deal of the taxpayer's money," 
Lewis says. "It is essential that the public understand the importance of 
this expenditure and the difficulties associated with such a vast 
undertaking." Lewis is director of the UI Martin Institute for Peace 
Studies and the National Alliance for Information Assurance. The free 
public forum is part of a three-day summer course to be offered July 28-30 
at UI Coeur d'Alene. Lewis will lead the course. Cost is $167 for one 
credit and $110 for non-credit seekers. Participants
will learn about what actions are being taken to protect the nation from 
further attacks, including an examination of the Department of Homeland 
Defense. Lewis also
will provide a brief historical view of efforts by the U.S. government to 
prepare the nation for domestic terrorist action prior to Sept. 11, 2001. 
With nearly three decades
of military service, Lewis provides consulting services to military and 
state departments in counter- and anti-terrorism. Lewis assisted in 
developing the Department of State Security Assistance counter-terrorism 
program. He also has extensive experience in international negotiations.
