The Friday Letter

A Newsletter for University of Idaho Alumni and Friends August 27, 2004

Dear Friday Letter reader,

Greetings! Other than rain on the day of the annual President's Barbecue,
fall semester has begun without a hitch. And thanks to great flexibility on
the part of students, faculty and staff, we just moved the party into the
Kibbie Dome and had a terrific time anyway. I had the opportunity to meet
many UI alumni, parents, friends and students; the Vandal spirit is
impressive! We are expecting a fairly flat enrollment following last year's
record numbers; final enrollment figures should be available after Labor
Day. I look forward to sharing our news in The Friday Letter. Thank you for
your interest in the University of Idaho.

Sincerely,

Tim White

President

Here's the latest news at the University of Idaho:

~ Former UI track athlete Angela Whyte, competing for Canada, finished sixth
in the 100-meter hurdles at the Olympic Games in Athens Tuesday.

With a personal best time of 12.69 seconds, she finished fourth in her heat
Monday morning (PDT) to automatically qualify for the final. Last week,
former Vandal Joachim Olsen took home a bronze medal in the shot put.

Competing for his native Denmark, Olsen took third with a throw of 69 feet
11/2 inches (21.07m).

~ The first four agencies moving into the new Idaho Water Center in Boise,
are hosting a public "construction zone preview" Sept. 2, 9 a.m. to noon.

Tours and a forum are free and open to the public. The IWC is a new
six-story facility at the intersection of Front and Broadway that houses
state, federal and university research focused on river and water quality
issues. The laboratories include the largest known high-elevation flume for
river simulation, hydro-informatics and computing to analyze lab results and
field tests, and the latest satellite technology to transmit field data.
Initial occupants are UI Boise engineering and administration; Idaho Water
Resources Research Institute; Idaho Department of Water Resources; and the
USDA Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station.

The center previewis part of the Sept. 1-4 Vandal Pride Days events
preceding Saturday's Vandal-Bronco football game. More information about how
to join that celebration is available at www.vandalpridedays.com.

~ Three UI students have been selected to participate in the National
Science Foundation's "Polar Internship Program" that culminates in spending
five months in Antarctica. This unique outreach opportunity is the result of
a cooperative arrangement between NSF and Raytheon Polar Services (RPS).

As the primary NSF contractor for administering Antarctica facilities, RPS
is charged with hiring service employees. In addition to service work, polar
interns complete a project tied to their academic discipline while earning
credit. The competitively selected UI students include Brianna Templin, an
architecture student from Palmer, Alaska; Paul Hamlett of Twin Falls, an
environmental science major; and Jennifer Szarkowski, a natural resources
major from Jamestown, N.D. After orientation in New Zealand, the students
will spend October through February 2005 at McMurdo Station, Antarctica.
