Greetings Visionaires -

Since there is an apparent interest on this listserve concerning the "goings
on" at UI and since I receive it every week, I thought that posing it here
would answer some questions.

Any thoughts?

Here is the UI Friday Letter.

Here's the latest news at the University of Idaho:
* Engineered solutions to space exploration, probing Earth's watery
depths, preserving its natural resources and improving life with
technology will be on display at the 2004 Engineering Design EXPO
April 30, on the Moscow campus. "Rising to the Challenge," a day-long
showcase of 75 inventions created by 350 engineering students, also
attracts regional high school students who have designed projects -
the best of which will fly on a high-altitude weather balloon Saturday,
May 1. A third dimension of Design EXPO is a panel of engineering
entrepreneurs who will explain how to take innovation to the marketplace.
David Cox, Design EXPO chair, said this year's projects include an
aquanol-powered van, a chemical-powered car and new methods to clean
up heavy metals in northern Idaho waters.

A parallel activity to EXPO at the Kibbie-ASUI Activity Center and the
Idaho Commons is Idaho TECH: Mars Rover Challenge. As many as 450
fifth- and sixth-graders will fill the Kibbie Dome for the Mars Rover
Challenge. Students race their own rovers built from Legos over a
simulated Mars terrain. Major sponsors of Engineering Design EXPO
include NASA, UI engineering departments and college, National Institute
for Advanced Transportation Technology, Micron, AMI Semiconductors,
Schweitzer Engineering Laboratory and AutoDesk. More information is
available at www.engr.uidaho.edu/expo.

* Family, friends, faculty and the public will gather at 5:30 p.m.,
Saturday, April 24, at the Hartung Theatre to celebrate the life of
the late Ernest W. Hartung, UI's 13th president. He died Sept. 26, 2003,
in Florida at age 86, having retired from UI 22 years ago. A short
program will start the event inside the theater, followed by a reception
in the lobby, which his children Denny, Kathy and John will attend. Other
friends and faculty will speak. Photos and memorabilia of the Hartung
years also will be displayed at UI's Administration Building for a month.

* UI's student delegation to the National Model United Nations won honors
at the April 6-10 conference in New York City. The 20 students represented
Guatemala in a simulation of 10 U.N. committees and were among 3,000
students participating from around the world. Bill Smith, UI's Martin
Institute and MUN adviser, said UI received an Outstanding Position Paper
award, given to just 10 percent of the delegations, for preparation and
understanding of their assigned nation; and an Honorable Mention for
finishing in the top 15 percent of all delegations.

* Thousands of visitors are expected to attend Moms' Weekend programs
April 23-25, to crown UI's Mom-of-the-Year, see a musical, flute fest,
turtle race, fun-run, awards, photos and other entertainment. For
additional information, contact the Alumni Office at (208) 885-6154.

* A UI team won the top ranking during this year's North American
Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge April 2 and 3. Hosted by Pennsylvania
State University, the dairy challenge drew students from the top
universities with dairy science programs, said Amin Ahmadzadeh, UI
assistant professor of dairy science and the team's faculty adviser.
The UI team won a first-place platinum award for their efforts. They
evaluated a dairy near Altoona, Pa., and presented recommendations to
improve its management to a panel of judges.
