[Vision2020] help please with tech advice

I have no idea if this is the right thing for me to do.
While working on my new computer (with Windows XP), a message popped 
onto my word screen advising me to go to:
http://www.howtodisablemessenger.com
to disable dangerous popup screens.
Given the bizarre guerrilla war between those who hack word programs and 
those who patch the holes, I do not know whether or not to follow the 
directions on the website suggested.
What is going on here?
Anyone who knows what is happening. please advise.....thanks BL
