Dear Visionaries,
Recently my son became the victim of harassment and bullying through a local school. This was not typical harassment, this harassment was centered around his sexual orientation. He has been threatened to be hit and had many nasty rumors spread about him from the person who is responsible. My son took these issues up with the school counselor who turned around and told the student body about the situation using my son as an example in her harassment seminar that she held two days after my son left the school because of this harassment. This counselor did not stop there, she told a teacher what was happening using my son's name and we know this because this teacher took my son aside to let him know he would lend an ear if necessary. My son trusted this counselor with this very private issue and she betrayed his confidentiality. I have taken all of this up with the school, but I feel as if they are portraying my son to be in the wrong instead of the people who should be held
responsible for the problem. We were told that the child that threatened my son was spoke to and he did not mean to say those things..and the school let it drop. The school has spoke with this child's friends about the situation but they have never made an attempt to speak to my son's friends about their feelings.
As of this day my son does not attend this school because he does not want to have to deal with the ongoing problem, but I feel that he was cheated out of a normal senior year because of the ignorance of this child and the insensitive nature on how the school handled this problem.
My passion is to have each person become aware that our children are our future and we need to learn and teach tolerance. It should not matter what my son's sexual orientation is, all that matters is that he should be entitled to the same type of senior year as the next person.
This situation has greatly impeded my son and his ability to trust adults of any kind. No child should be made to feel like a lessor person because they may have some differences from others. Situations like this one should not be allowed to be swept under the carpet.
I will do what I can to make sure that no other child will have to make sacrifices like my son did just because he has been labeled as being "different". I hope that everyone will keep an eye on our schools to make sure that bullying and harassment are not a tolerated issue. Someone needs to be held responsible. I am doing what I can to guarantee that it will happen.
Thank you,
Sue W.
