Afghans for Afghans has taken on an extraordinary challenge, and I invite
everyone on the list to take a break from circular debates and pick up a
circular needle. I'll even volunteer to teach anyone who wants to learn how
to knit--in exchange for an afghan square!
Our local Friends Meeting has sent nearly 35 items this year--baby blankets,
mittens, socks, and hats. Please think seriously about helping out.

*** We're Going to Try to Clothe 5,000 Afghan Kids for the Winter ***
We've decided to take the plunge and respond affirmatively to a request for
hand-knit and crocheted *wool* hats, mittens, socks, sweaters, and vests for
5,000 Afghan children ages 1 - 5 years. Gulp!
This assignment is an outcome of our special delivery to Kabul last
December. Remember these photos of the kids wearing our gifts:
http://www.afghansforafghans.org/kabul1202.html
They were so delighted with their high-quality warm and colorful clothing
received all the way from friends in North America -- that's what prompted
this big order!
It took us a couple months to confirm the transportation (without having to
do massive fundraising to pay for it), and therefore we're short on time.
How could we say no to such young children? We had to say yes, and we hope
you agree. So, we're going to give it our best shot at collecting at least
one item for each of the 5,000 kids.
We hope you will participate. Even one small well-made cap will make a big
difference for the recipient.
Feel free to forward this message to those not on this list or other
appropriate forums -- we're testing the power of the Internet! If you can
share this message with offline friends, your local yarn shop, your local
newspaper, your guild, etc., that word-of-mouth will be valuable, too. Or,
maybe you have some wool yarn odd balls that you can give to a friend so
she/he can make a child's garment to donate.
We need to receive your handmade gifts for the kids by August 1 (July 25 for
Canadians). This is because shipping to Central Asia takes a long time. The
garments will be distributed in October before it gets cold. These gifts are
going to refugee and vulnerable children in Kabul and the Shomali Valley.
Our U.S. and Canadian mail addresses, plus overall project information are
always posted here:

We continue to gratefully partner with the ever-reliable San Francisco
office of the American Friends Service Committee and World Concern to make
this effort happen.
Please note, we cannot accept used items, and we've had no request for
scarves, ear warmers, or toys (sorry!). The request was specifically for
sweaters, vests, hats, socks, and mittens made of wool yarn for kids, ages 1
- 5 years. Warm wool blends (with a high percentage of wool content) are
also acceptable. Please label your item with the fiber content if you can --
to make our sorting go more smoothly. Not to worry about the wool getting
into washing machines or hot water -- these luxuries are uncommon in
Afghanistan right now. Please avoid white and very light colors that soil
