The incident at the Gulf of Tonkin was an attempt by President Johnson =
to
gain public support for a war in Vietnam. In 1949 the French advised
President Hoover that the North Vietnamese (and Ho Chi Minh in =
particular)
were Communist. Remember, this was shortly after the Soviet Union had
obtained "the bomb". There was a major fear and hate for anyone and
anything Communist. The French played up to that for everything it was
worth. So, when Ho Chi Minh approached President Hoover for US support =
in
developing North Vietnamese independence (from French Indochina), =
Hoover
said "No". So, guess where Ho Chi Minh's next stop was for support? =
The
Soviet Union and China? Bingo.

Was that the French lying about what happened or didn't happen in the =
Tonkin
Gulf? Did they hide the air campaign against Cambodia?
Sorry, I don't buy the theory that we were an innocent, wide-eyed state =
that
got bamboozled by the French into involvement in Vietnam. Our =
government
knew what it was doing. =20
